RIP Roberto Clemente

The charismatic and often honored Puerto Rican baseball player died on this day in 1972. A plane crash off the Puerto Rican coast ended his life. The plane carried supplies to victims of the 1972 Managuan earthquake, the fourth of these shipments organized by Clemente. Clemente traveled with the fourth because members of the predatory Somoza regime had stolen the previous aid shipments and he intended to make sure quake victims got the aid meant for them.
