A Norwegian reactionary arrested

As of Saturday morning, the two attacks in Norway appear to be the work of a political reactionary who wanted to terrorize the Norwegian Labor Party (Arbeiderpartiet, A/Ap). The New York Times writes that:

The Norwegian police on Saturday charged a 32-year-old man, whom they identified as a Christian fundamentalist with right-wing connections, over the bombing of a government center here and a shooting attack on a nearby island that together left at least 91 people dead.

The police said they did not know if the man, identified by the Norwegian media as Anders Behring Breivik, was part of a larger conspiracy. He is being questioned under the country’s terrorism laws, police said, and is cooperating with the investigation of the attacks, the deadliest on Norwegian soil since World War II.

“We are not sure whether he was alone or had help,” a police official, Roger Andresen, said at a televised news conference, adding: “What we know is that he is right-wing and a Christian fundamentalist.” So far Mr. Breivik has not been linked to any anti-jihadist groups, he said.

The Washington Post reports that:

“What we know is that he is right wing and he is Christian fundamentalist,” deputy police chief Roger Andresen said Saturday morning at a televised news conference. “We have not been able to link him up to an anti-Islamic group.” He said that the suspect had not been arrested before, and that police were unsure if he had acted alone.

“We find him responsible for both of the attacks,” Andresen said. “At the moment we have no other people to arrest.”

The Independent reports that:

An official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attack “is probably more Norway’s Oklahoma City than it is Norway’s World Trade Center.” Domestic terrorists carried out the 1995 attack on a federal building in Oklahoma City, while foreign terrorists were responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Though the prime minister cautioned against jumping to conclusions about the gunman’s motives, both attacks were in areas connected to the left-leaning Labour Party, which leads a coalition government. The youth camp, about 20 miles northwest of Oslo, is organized by the party’s youth wing, and the prime minister had been scheduled to speak there today.

Finally, the AftenPosten reports that:

On Internet forums, he has made controversial post in which he is critical of Islam. He describes himself as a “nationalist”.

Anders Behring Breivik has been active in various online forums, including, he added around 75 posts in the Islam-critical site Document.no.

According to sources close to the site are those currently no comments posted by Breivik after 29 October 2010, but there is a chance that the posts are posted in the post with another “Nick”.
